Dayton Dragons News Release

Battle Creek, MI - Travis Wood of the Dragons (WP, 4-0) and Wade Davis (LP, 3-1) of the Devil Rays locked horns in a pitchers duel Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium in the second game of a four game series between the Dayton Dragons (23-21) and the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (23-20). Wood out dueled Davis and the Dragons picked up its Midwest League leading sixth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win

Wood allowed a bunt single in the bottom half of the first inning to J.T. Hall, who advanced to second when the pitcher threw wild to first base. Wood stranded the runner at second base and kept the Rays off the board. The Dragons lefty walked a pair of Rays in the second but once again left both on the base paths. Wood left in the bottom of the sixth inning after reaching his pitch count on the afternoon. In 5.1 innings on the day, Wood allowed just one hit, while striking out seven, walking three and hitting one batter.

Davis looked like the second coming of Jake McGee, the Rays starter on Saturday night who no hit the Dragons for 5.1 innings. The hard throwing right hander took a no hitter into the sixth inning on Sunday. With two down, Mike DeJesus picked up the first hit of the day for Dayton with a single to right. DeJesus moved to second base on a mishandled pick off throw by Rays first baseman Rhyne Hughes. With DeJesus at second, Jay Brice dumped a single into shallow center that landed just out of the reach of Rays shortstop Neil Walton for a base hit that scored DeJesus and Dayton led 1-0.

Bo Lanier (ND) replaced Wood in the bottom of the sixth inning and got Dayton out of a one on, one out situation. Wood hit Hall with a pitch to lead off the inning. On the first pitch Lanier threw to Southwest Michigan DH Christian Lopez, the right handed batter hammered a pitch into the hole at third, which the Dayton infield tuned into a 5-4-3 inning ending double play.

Mike Griffin gave the Dragons some insurance in the eighth inning with his second homer of the season, a two run shot to left that scored Josh Holden in front of him, that extended the advantage to 3-0. Griffin's homer came off Chris Kelly (ND) who replaced Davis after the Rays starter left with one out in the seventh. Davis tossed 6.1 innings of four hit baseball with nine K's and two walks. The lone run Davis allowed was unearned.

Southwest Michigan picked up just its second hit in the bottom of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning off Blake Hendley (SV, 9) who replaced Lanier after 2.2 innings of work. Lanier did not allow a hit or run and struck out two and walked one on the day. The single allowed by Hendley was of the infield variety, as just three balls hit by Southwest Michigan left the infield all day. Hendley stranded the single at first and picked up his ninth save of the year and 23rd of his Dragons career.

The Dragons and Devil Rays continue the four game series Monday morning from C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek, Michigan with an 11:05 AM first pitch. RHP Carlos Fisher (4-3, 3.16 ERA) gets the start for the Dragons, while Southwest Michigan will counter with RHP Greg Reinhard (0-4, 5.74 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 10:30 PM.
