Burlington Bees News Release
Appleton, WI (May 21, 2006) - Ron Garth's pinch-hit homer leading off the bottom of the eleventh inning lifted the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (18-25) to a 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees (19-22) at Fox Cities Stadium this afternoon. The loss ends the Bees' seven-game winning streak and evened this series at a game apiece.
The Bees led three times during the game, but each time they scored, the Timber Rattlers answered. Josh Johnson drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a one-out single by Mario Lisson, and scored as Lisson broke up a possible double play at second as JP Lowen reached on a fielder's choice. The Rattlers answered in the bottom of the first with an unearned run against Bees' starter Carlos Rosa. With Luis Valbuena at first and one out, Mike Saunders bunted, Lowen picked it up on a hop in front of the plate and fired to second, but the throw sailed into center for an error and Valbuena went to third. After a walk loaded the bases, JB Tucker tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the top of the fourth, Lowen led off with a double off of Rattlers' starter Jason Snyder. After a strikeout and a popout, Jeremy Jirschele extended the inning with an infield single, and Jose Duarte singled to left to drive in Lowen and put the Bees back on top 2-1. The Rattlers answered in the bottom of the fourth with three straight two-out singles to tie the score again.
Rosa came out after just four innings because of a high pitch count and Rayner Oliveros pitched two scoreless innings to get through the sixth. Snyder came out after six innings for Wisconsin. Nick Allen took over in the seventh and gave up a leadoff single to Johnson. Johnson reached base all six times he came to the plate on the single and five walks. Johnson adohnson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris McConnell, to third on a flyout to deep right-center by Lisson, and scored on a two-out double by Lowen to put the Bees back on top 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tucker doubled with one out and Oliveros gave way to Gilbert De La Vara. De La Vara fanned Casey Craig for the second out, but Robby Hudson hit a 1-2 pitch for a double off the wall in left to tie the score and give De La Vara his first blown save chance of the season. De La Vara finished the inning and pitched a scoreless eighth. The Bees had runners on first and third with one out in both the ninth and tenth innings, but couldn't score. De La Vara left with one out in the ninth and Chris Hayes finished the inning to force extra innings. Jeff Dominguez and Valbuena delivered back-to-back two-out singles in the tenth, but Eliezer Garcia got Saunders to flyout to end the inning. Joe Woerman (2-2) worked a scoreless eleventh inning and got he win when Garth belted a 3-2 pitch from Garcia (0-2) over the wall in left for the victory.
The Bees and Timber Rattlers will continue this series tomorrow morning at 11:35 AM at Fox Cities Stadium. RH Michael Penn (2-1, 4.02) will start for the Bees against LH Justin Thomas (4-3, 1.86) for Wisconsin. The game will be broadcast live on The Ticket 1360 KBKB AM with the pre-game show starting at 11:15.
