
Silver Hawks roll past the Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - South Bend took a 4-1 lead early and never trailed in a 9-3 win over the Whitecaps.
Dusty Ryan hit a home run for the second day in a row. The solo shot to the opposite field in right in the fourth cut the Silver Hawks lead to 4-2.
An RBI single by Mike Hollimon reduced the advantage to 4-3 in the fifth inning before South Bend pulled away.
West Michigan allowed a season-high 17 hits as the Silver Hawks scored in six different innings. Starting pitcher Burke Badenhop matched his own season high for the team by allowing 10 hits in 5.2 innings. Six runs were charged to Badenhop and four of them were earned.
Josh Rainwater made his 2006 Whitecaps debut with 3.1 innings of relief and three runs allowed on seven hits.
Pedro Ciriaco went 5-for-5 to highlight the South Bend offense with a triple, double, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Trey Hendricks went 3-for-3 with and RBI, a walk and was hit by a pitch.
Pedro Cotto extended his hitting streak to 12 games for the Whitecaps with a 2-for-5 effort.
Michael Hernandez made the most of his first professional game even though he did not register a hit. The Whitecaps outfielder swung at the first pitch of his first plate appearance and put West Michigan on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly to right in the second inning. Hernandez later threw out Hendricks at home plate when the South Bend DH tried to score from second in the sixth.
Prior to Sunday, the Whitecaps had not allowed more than 11 hits in a single game.
