Kane County Cougars News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Kane County Cougars completed a four-game sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels by virtue of a 6-5 win Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The victory marks the Cougars' second sweep of the season, puts them nine games above .500 and extends their winning streak to seven games for the first time since 2004. Jeff Baisley drove in two runs, and Steve Kleen posted three RBIs, as Trey Shields nabbed his first May win.
The Kernels grabbed three runs off Shields in the first two innings, but the right-hander settled down to last six innings. Kane County's offense came alive in the fourth against hard-throwing pitcher Tommy Mendoza. Frank Martinez doubled and scored on a Baisley single for a 3-1 deficit. After Anthony Recker walked, Kleen smacked a two-run double to tie it and then scampered to third after a throw to home plate got away. Jose Pineda took advantage of the error with a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 Cougars lead.
Shields surrendered a two-run home run in the sixth and left trailing 5-4 but got a boost from his team's offense in the seventh against reliever Tim Didjurgis. Mike Massaro and Martinez walked to set up Baisley's run-scoring double to make it 5-5, and Steve Kleen later got hit by a pitch from Robert Romero with the bases loaded to put the Cougars ahead 6-5. Those runs made a winner out of Shields (3-5), who gave up five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four for his first victory since April 17. He lasted six-plus frames for the fifth time this season. Didjurgis (0-2) got saddled with the loss.
The Cougars' bullpen came through as usual, with Ron Madej, Dan Fyvie and T.J. Franco tossed three scoreless relief innings to certify the win. Franco recorded the final four outs for his third save of the series.
The Cougars (27-18) are off Wednesday and begin a four-game series Thursday at Eflstrom Stadium against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Jared Lansford (3-1, 1.17) is scheduled to take the mound. First pitch is 6 p.m. CDT.
