Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Kane County Cougars completed a four-game sweep of the Kernels on Tuesday afternoon by taking a 6-5 victory over the Kernels in front of 3,632 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jordan Renz and Mark Trumbo each homered for the Kernels but neither could power the Kernels past the Western Division leading Cougars, who improved to 27-18 and knocked the 20-26 Kernels 7-1/2 games off the pace for firrst place.

Renz staked the Kernels and starter Tommy Mendoza to an early 2-0 lead by belting a Trey Shields pitch over the left .eld wall in the .rst inning and the Kernels added to their lead with an RBI double by Travis Schlichting in the third.

The Cougars .nally got to Mendoza for four runs in the fourth inning after the Kernels starter had thrown three no-hit innings to start the contest. Jeff Baisley had an RBI single for the Cougars and Steve Kleen cleaned up with a two-run double off Mendoza before scoring on a sacri.ce .y by Jose Pineda.

Undaunted, the Kernels fought back to take the lead in the sixth when Trumbo blasted a two-run shot onto Eighth Avenue beyond left .eld off Kane County starter Trey Shields (3-5) to give the Kernels a 5-4 lead.

The newfound lead was erased by the Cougars with two runs off reliever Tim Didjurgis (0-2) in the seventh.

The bottom of the eighth gave the Kernels the perfect opportunity to win the game as Kane County reliever Dan Fyvie walked the bases loaded with two outs, but T. J. Franco came in the from the bullpen and got Brett Martinez to strike out looking to end the threat.

Franco earned his third save of the year for the Cougars with a relatively calm ninth, allowing just a two-out walk to Coon before Renz grounded to third to end the game.

Mendoza turned in a quality start for the Kernels, lasting six innings and allowing three earned runs. The 18-year-old right hander left the game with a 5-4 lead after the sixth but did not factor in the decision.

The Kernels have Wednesday afternoon off before heading to Davenport on Thursday to open a four-game series with the Swing of the Quad Cities at John O'Donnell Stadium. Nick Adenhart (7-0) is scheduled to face the Swing's Jaime Garcia (3-3) at 7 p.m.
