Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Catcher Brandon Yarbrough and outfielder Simon Williams will swap addresses as the Swing of the Quad Cities lose one familiar face but gain another, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday. Yarbrough becomes the second Swing player to head to Palm Beach this season, joining Wes Swackhamer on the Florida State League Cardinals' roster.
To replace Yarbrough behind the plate, catcher Henry Guerrero has been transferred from extended spring training to the Quad Cities. In order to make room for Guerrero on the active roster, outfielder Matt Wilkerson has been transferred back to extended spring training.
Yarbrough, 21, was hitting .303 in his second season with the Swing, including one home run and 12 RBI in 29 games. After being selected in the fifth round of the 2003 draft out of Richmond Senior High School in North Carolina, his promotion will enable him - as well as fellow Swing catching prospect Bryan Anderson - to play every day.
Williams returns to the Quad Cities after spending his first 26 games with Palm Beach, hitting .154 but launching five home runs with eight RBI. The 23-year-old had his best game of the season on Thursday, entering as a pinch-hitter in a 17-0 thrashing of Fort Myers and belting a pair of home runs in two at-bats while driving in five. In 2005, the 11th-rounder out of the University of Maine hit .287 with six home runs, 27 RBI, and 13 doubles in 64 games for the Swing.
Joining Quad Cities as their second catcher will be Guerrero, 24, who was signed by the Cardinals in October after being released from the Baltimore Orioles' organization. The native of Valencia, Venezuela had his best season with the Gulf Coast League Orioles in 2002, when Guerrero hit .290 with eight doubles and two home runs in his 35-game United States debut.
The final moved announced by the Cardinals Tuesday was the transfer of Wilkerson, 23, back to extended spring training. The UC Santa Barbara product began the year there before joining the Swing on April 18 in their first roster move of the year. After belting two home runs and driving in eight in his first 10 games for Quad Cities, the athletic outfielder hit only .091 (3-33) with two RBI and no extra-base hits in his 13 games since.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
