Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays defeated the Dayton Dragons to split the four-game series. The final score of tonight's game was 5-4. The win came by way of a Neil Walton walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth that scored J.T. Hall from second base.
Jeff Kamrath took the hill to start for the Rays and went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs with three strikeouts and three walks. With Kamrath's outing, the Devil Rays starting rotation only allowed one earned run in the entire set against Dayton.
Dragons starter Zach Ward tossed seven full innings, striking out nine and limiting the Rays to just three hits. The D-Rays trailed 3-0 going into the eighth, but their fortunes changed as the plot thickened.
The Dragons brought in Damien Ursin to relieve Ward, but he didn't get to throw a pitch. Ursin changed his jersey number and it wasn't reported, so he was not eligible to play. Bo Lanier then took the mound and gave up two runs off of two hits and two walks.
Dayton put up another run in the top of the ninth to extend their lead 4-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Lanier walked two batters and was replaced by Kyle Huddy. With Alex Jamieson on first and Hunter Vick at second, J.T. Hall hit a monster shot off of the center field wall for a double, scoring both runners. Christian Lopez struck out swinging for the second out.
Neil Walton was up to the plate next, coming in with an 0 for 20 slump. Walton ended it with a single to right field, plating Hall for the victory.
Greg Dupas picked up the win, pitching the ninth inning. Dupas fanned one batter while walking one, allowing one hit and one run. His streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run was snapped at 15 1/3 frames.
The win marked the ninth time this year that the Rays have won with a run in their final at-bat. The Rays improve their record to 24-21, sitting in third place in the Eastern Division.
The Devil Rays have the day off tomorrow before a very important four game series against the first place West Michigan Whitecaps. It's Thirsty Thursday at C.O. Brown. Fans can get a beer or a pop for only $1 until the end of the 7th inning. Stick around, because after the game there will be a live music performance by "The Weatherly Band" in the TDS Metrocom Left Field Bar. Thirsty Thursday is brought to you by Super Rock 104.9 FM.
