Garcia returns the favor: Whitecaps shut out South Bend
May 23, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Ramon Garcia gave up a two out walk to Justin Upton in the first and a one out single to Trey Hendricks in the second but nothing else en route to a one-hit shutout of South Bend and a 3-0 Whitecaps victory. The effort followed a 4-0 shutout win by the Silver Hawks Monday night.
Garcia is now 6-1 and retired the final 23 batters of the game and has allowed just one run in his last 25 innings pitched. Tuesday was Garcia's second consecutive nine-inning performance. It was also his second complete game of the season. The first was a rain-shortened five inning game April 29 at Wisconsin.
There have been six shutouts thrown by the Whitecaps pitching staff this season and Garcia has been the starter for three of them.
Justin Justice delivered a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth inning that allowed Pedro Cotto to score and put the Whitecaps on top, 1-0. Cotto reached on an error and later came through with his own sac fly, but saw his 13-game hitting streak come to a close.
The unearned run was the only run allowed by South Bend starter Adam Howard who took the loss and fell to 1-1.
Mark Haske had an RBI single for the Whitecaps in the seventh. Will Rhymes scored on Cotto's sacrifice following a lead off triple in the eighth.
West Michigan earned a 2-2 split in the series and hold onto first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
Getting Faster: For the second day in a row, the Whitecaps played their fastest 9-nning game of the season at 1 hour and 50 minutes, eclipsing the 1 hour, 55 minute game against the Silver Hawks on Monday night.
