Lugnuts Take Series From Fort Wayne

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts plated three runs in the sixth inning and held on to defeat the Fort Wayne Wizards 4-3 before 8,794 fans at Oldsmobile Park Tuesday afternoon. Third baseman Anthony Garibaldi's leaping throw across his body retired Kyle Banks by less than a step at first base to end the game as Mike Baxter was racing home from third for Fort Wayne.
Lansing took the lead for good in the sixth inning after falling behind 2-1 in the top half of the frame. With two men out, Cory Patton started a Lugnuts rally by doubling to right field. He was followed by a Joey Metropoulos single that plated Patton and tied the score at 2-2. Brian Pettway then sliced a double into right-center field to score Metropoulos from first and give the Lugnuts a 3-2 lead. David Hicks stepped into the box next and roped a single to left field that brought Pettway home from second to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Wizards answered in the eighth when Daryl Jones smacked a homer over the left field wall on the first pitch that he saw in the game to pull Fort Wayne to within one. He was pinch hitting for Nic Crosta, who had been ejected earlier in the game for arguing balls and strikes. Four Wizards were ejected during the course of the game.
Russ Savickas started the game for Lansing, but received his eighth no decision in nine starts this season after tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits.
Yesson Berroa picked up the win for Lansing, allowing just one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. Paul Phillips picked up his sixth save in the game.
Josh Geer, the starting pitcher for Fort Wayne, took the loss after hurling 5 2/3 innings and surrendering four runs on eight hits.
Lansing (26-18) and Fort Wayne (22-21) will each take Wednesday off before renewing acquaintances on Thursday evening at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Billy Carnline will take the hill for the Lugnuts, while Fabian Jimenez will take the ball for the Wizards. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
