
Cougars lose to South Bend, 5 - 4

South Bend, IN â The Kane County Cougars saw a four run lead disappear as the South Bend Silver Hawks came from behind to win 5 â 4 Monday night at Coveleski Stadium. The Cougars jumped out to a 4 â 0 lead only to see the first half Eastern Champions score five unanswered runs and win the game.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in their first at bat when Vasili Spanos cracked a two run homer over the left-field wall for a 2 - 0 lead.
Kane County added another run in the top of the third inning as David Harriman led off the frame with a double. Harriman went to third on a Chad Scarberry wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Rogers to talk a 3 â 0 lead. The Cougars added another run in the top of the fourth when Brian Snyder led off the inning with a double and went to third on a single from Kory Wayment. Snyder then scored on an infield ground out to give Kane County a 4 â 0 lead.
The Silver Hawks came back and scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to take a 5 â 4 lead. Cougars starter Chris Dunwell was charged for all five runs and was lifted in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brigmer Leon and J.R. Pickens kept the Silver Hawks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the night.
The Cougars trailed going into the top of the ninth when Eddie Kim hit a two-out single to put the tying run on base. The Cougars brought David Castillo off the bench to pinch-hit while the Hawks went to reliever Ruben Vicente. Vicente got Castillo to fly out to deep right field to end the game and take game one of the series. Chad Scarberry got the win to improve to (11 â 9), while Dunwell picked up the loss to fall to (11 â 7) on the year.
The Cougars and the Silver Hawks will play game two of the four game set Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. game. Trent Peterson will get the nod for the Cougars as Jered Liebeck will be on the mound for South Bend.
