Swing hold on for third straight win

August 30, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities late relief work was dominant and the Swing hitting was timely on Monday night as the Swing defeated the Clinton LumberKings, 5-3, at Alliant Energy Field. Kyle Geiger paced the Swing offense with three RBI on the night as the Swing moved within one game of Clinton with seven games to play. If the playoffs were to start on Tuesday, the Swing would be the MWL-West's second half wild card.

With the game even, 3-3, in the top of the seventh, the Swing took the lead for good. Matt Moses drew a walk with one out, and Brock Peterson followed with a single to center. Reliever Chris Cordeiro came on, and Kyle Geiger ripped his first pitch down the left field line for a two-run double to give the Swing a 5-3 advantage.

Eric Brandon got the save for the Swing, striking out three men in 1.1 innings of work. He allowed a pair of hits in the ninth inning, but struck out Abigail Sandoval to close it out for his seventh save. Brandon followed Tristan Crawford, who also fanned three in 1.1 innings.

The Swing jumped out to the early lead, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Denard Span opened with a single, and JR Taylor reached on an error. Matt Moses followed with an RBI single, his first RBI since coming off the disabled list. A one-out infield single from Kyle Geiger plated Taylor for a 2-0 Swing edge.

Clinton chipped away with an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame. After Micah Furtado was hit by a pitch with two outs, Larry Grayson reached when his popup to right was dropped by Alex Garcia. Furtado scored on the misplay. Kevin Richardson blasted a solo homer in the second inning to tie it up.

The Swing took back the lead in the top of the fourth inning, when Alex Garcia led off with a gap-splitting triple to left-center. Omar Burgos' fly ball to center brought home Garcia for a 3-2 Swing lead.

The LumberKings tied it up in the bottom of the sixth, when Dane Bubela drew a bases-loaded walk against Julio DePaula.

Glen Perkins went five strong innings for the Swing, allowing two runs on two hits as he picked up no decision. The lefthander struck out six and walked none, and has 43 strikeouts against only nine walks in 43.1 innings with the Swing.

DePaula nabbed his team-leading 11th win for the Swing despite allowing one run.

UP NEXT: The Swing and LumberKings continue the four-game series on Tuesday, as Scott Tyler (6-4, 2.74) takes the hill against Jose Garcia (2-2, 3.18). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on Great Country 105 will begin at 6:45.

NEXT HOME GAME: The Swing will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on Friday, September 3, to begin a four-game series against the Clinton LumberKings. Friday night will feature ESPN's You Call the Play kiosk available free of charge on the stadium concourse. Tickets are available to remaining Swing games by calling (563) 328-2000.
