The Yankees also had their share of hits, knocking out 16 in the game, and it all started in the first. Nick Walsh led off the game with a single. He stole second, and then Hector Made doubled him home to give the Yankees the early lead. The Yankees scored again in the second when Jason VanMeetren started the inning with a single. Willie Vasquez followed with a double, and then Tommy Rojas hit a two-run single making the score 3-0.
The Yankees scored three runs in the fourth. Vasquez led off the inning with a triple. He scored on a bunt by Walsh. Made then hit a two-run homer to give the Yankees a six-run lead. Battle Creek added one in the fifth on an RBI single by Vasquez, and then the Yanks added made it 8-0 in the seventh when John Urick hit a home run. After the Dragons got their first run in the seventh, they had a big rally in the ninth. They scored four unearned runs, but the Yankees held on for the victory, 8-5.
Amad Stephens came out of the bullpen to get his first save of the season. He went three innings while allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out three, and walking no one. The Yankees look to take the first two games of the series on Tuesday evening. With only seven games left, the Yankees control their playoff destiny as they ended the game still one game ahead of the Fort Wayne Wizards for that final playoff spot in the Eastern Divsion.
