Hawks Take The Fifth

South Bend, IN – Going into Monday night's game, the South Bend Silver Hawks outscored their opponents in the fifth inning 76-63. In the fifth inning of Monday's game, the Hawks scored three runs to come from behind and defeat the Kane County Cougars 5-4.

The Cougars got things started quickly. In the first, Alex Cremidan's Olympic teammate, Vasili Spanos clubbed a two out two run homer over the left centerfield wall for his 12th homerun of the year.

Kane County put straight numbers up in the third and fourth innings. Nick Rogers drove in a run with a scoring fly ball in the third and Eddie Kim's groundout plated Brian Snyder to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings.

In the fourth, the Hawks mounted their comeback.

Edgar Varela opened the frame with a single and advanced to second on a base hit by Brian Rose. After Jereme Milons reached on a fielder's choice moving Varela to third, Varela scored the Hawks first run when Alberto Gonzalez grounded out to reach on a fielder's choice. Gonzalez would come around to score on a single by Jonny Kaplan to pull the Hawks within a pair at 4-2.

South Bend grabbed the lead it would not relinquish in the fifth.

With one retired, Allen Mottram, the Midwest League Player of the Week reached on a fielder' choice, advanced to second on an Edgar Varela base hit and they both scored on a two-run double by Brian Rose. The Hawk took the lead when Alberto Gonzalez hit a two out scoring triple to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.

Chad Scarbery pitched eight strong innings to improve to 11-9, while Ruben Vicente comes out of the pen to earn his second save of 2004.

The Silver Hawks continue their four game set with the Cougars Tuesday night. Tuesday is Goodwill All Faiths Night presented by Goodwill and WFRN, 104.7 FM. Fans looking to attend the game can receive $2 dollars off any ticket purchased when they bring a donation for Goodwill or their church, mosque or synagogue bulletin. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
