Dragons Come Back In Ninth But Fall Short 8-5
August 30, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH â The Dayton Dragons (18-45, 45-88) were outmatched for most of the series opener with the Battle Creek Yankees (34-29, 67-65) on Monday night, but made it a game of things in the ninth. Dayton plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth but fell on the short end of an 8-5 score in front of 7,805 at Fifth Third Field.
The Yankees were able to jump out early and often on Dragons starter Frankie Keller (L, 0-5). The visitors plated three runs in the first two innings, before blowing it open with a three run fourth innings. In that frame, Willie Vasquez led off with a triple to the right field wall and, after an Enrique Cruz walk, came home to score on a fielders choice. With two outs in the fourth, Hector Made sent a two run shot over the left field wall, extending the Yankees advantage to 6-0.
On the other side of things, Dayton was having all kinds of trouble getting anything going against Battle Creek starter Ben Moore (W, 7-3). Through the first four innings, the righty had allowed only five base runners, all were left stranded. He would pick up win number seven, scattering six hits, while striking out nine in his six shutout innings.
Newcomer Robbie Wachman (ND) would follow Keller for the Dragons and proceeded to pitch 3.1 innings of four hit baseball, allowing two more runs while striking out five. Earning the no decision, Wachman allowed the Yankees to extend their lead to 8-0.
Habelito Hernandez tripled to lead off the Dragons seventh inning and came around to score the Fire Breather's first run when Jorge Mejia knocked an RBI single to right field; the run off new pitcher Amad Stephens (ND) put the Miami Valley's team on the board. In the ninth, the Dragons looked to have run out of gas, retiring the first two batters on a matter of pitches.
However, after Jorge Mejia reached on an error by second baseman Enrique Cruz, Luis Bolivar singled, Javon Moran knocked an RBI single of his own to center field, and Ben Himes drove a Stephens fastball to deep left center field for a three run homer, cutting the lead to 8-5. Unfortunately for the Dragons, they were unable to mount a comeback as Jeff Urgelles popped out to short stop, snuffing out the ninth inning flare.
The Dragons will continue their final home series of the 2004 on Tuesday night against the Battle Creek Yankees at Fifth Third Field. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 pm. RHP Joe Wilson will get the start for Dayton, while the Yankees will counter with RHP Jason Jones.
