Kane County Cougars News Release

PEORIA, IL - Josh Horton got the Kane County Cougars off to a good start Tuesday night with a first-inning home run, but the Peoria Chiefs handled the offense the rest of the way and beat the Cougars, 5-1, in front of 3,439 at O'Brien Field. The Cougars are back to 3.5 games behind the Chiefs for a playoff spot with 19 games remaining in the season and two more head-to-head contests.

Horton blasted a one-out solo shot off Marco Carrillo (5-5) in the opening inning for his first homer as a Cougar and second as a pro. The 1-0 lead held up through two innings as starter Travis Banwart retired the first six batters he faced. Then Banwart got two outs in the third before the Chiefs forged a three-run rally involving three hits, a walk and two errors.

Peoria tacked on one more in the sixth against Banwart (1-1), who departed after allowing four runs -- two earned -- on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking two and fanning three. Scott Deal finished the sixth for him and worked a 1-2-3 seventh before the Chiefs added a run in the eighth to account for the 5-1 finish.

The Cougars (26-24) are off Wednesday before heading to Quad Cities (32-18) Thursday to start a two-game series against the first-place Swing. The game starts at 7 CT, with James Heuser (10-6) facing Shaun Garceau (7-10).
