Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

August 14, 2007 - The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in the final game of a four game series at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels had difficulty figuring out Loons starter Josh Wall (6-8) as he held them scoreless on five hits over 5-2/3 innings pitched.

Peter Bourjos led the Kernels attack, going 3 for 5 with a run scored. Tadd Brewer was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI and Brian Walker drove in a run with a sac fly in the eighth inning.

The Kernel defense was shoddy at times, as four errors led to two unearned runs.

Kernels starter Jeremy Haynes (5-6) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out four, but was lifted after facing three batters in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Kelly Shearer came on and induced a double play on catcher Juan Apodaca that scored a run and then got Trayvon Robinson to ground out to end the inning.

Great Lakes increased their lead to 5-0 in the top of the seventh as Juan Rivera hit a two run home run off Shearer.

The Kernels took advantage of two Loon errors in the eighth as the scored three runs (one earned) off reliever Arismendy Castillo. And with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the ninth, Abel Nieves drove a ball deep to left center that was caught on the warning track to end the game.

The loss drops the Kernels below .500 in the second half at 25-26 and 63-57 overall. After an off day on Wednesday, they start a two game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday, August 16 at 7 pm. It will be 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup night where fans can enjoy 12 ounce draws of beer or soda for just a buck.

Friday's game with the Chiefs is nearly a sellout, as only lawn and standing room (SRO) tickets remain. This is the final time during the regular season that Peoria, and their hall of fame manager, Ryne Sandberg, will visit Cedar Rapids in 2007.
