Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels were held to four hits in a 3-2 loss to the Great Lakes Loon on Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Three Kernel errors led to two unearned runs, including the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Mount was 1 for 3 with a solo home run in the second inning. Wil Ortiz drove in P.J. Phillips, who had singled, on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 2-2. Matt Sweeney and Peter Bourjos had the other two hits for the Kernels.

Great Lakes starter Steven Johnson (3-5), son of major league player and manager Davey Johnson, held the Kernels to two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out six over eight innings. Thomas Melgarejo struck out one in the ninth to earn his second save.

Kernels starter Trevor Bell delivered a quality start, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision effort. Amalio Diaz (1-5) was the tough-luck loser, giving up an unearned run on one hit and striking out four over two innings.

The loss drops the Kernels second half record to 25-25, 4-1/2 games behind Peoria for the final MWL West playoff spot.

The final noon game of the year is Tuesday when the Kernels take on the Loons for 104.5 KDAT Lunch at the Ballpark. Fans can enjoy a Triple Play Combo of a regular sandwich, soda or beer, and chips or popcorn for just five bucks. Gates open at 11 am.
