Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities picked up their second walkoff win of the series on Tuesday night, sweeping away the Fort Wayne Wizards with a 7-6 thriller at John O'Donnell Stadium.
Quad Cities (32-18, 70-49) pulled off their third four-game sweep of the season, winning for the eighth time in their last nine and improving to 16-5 since July 24. Meanwhile, Fort Wayne (17-33, 48-71) lost their fifth consecutive game while dropping to 3-11 this month.
The game was in a 6-6 tie when Kyle Mura (3-0) wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth, inducing a 1-2-3 double play to preserve the deadlock. Moments later, he was rewarded with the win.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Swing were determined to finish the contest in regulation. Table-setter Antone DeJesus led off the frame by drawing a walk and was at second base with nobody out when Steven Hill came to the dish. The slugger from Houston had already driven in two runs on the night, and on a full-count pitch singled to left to score DeJesus for the 7-6 victory.
The loss went to Rolando Valdez (2-4), who threw a perfect eighth inning before failing to record an out in the ninth.
Initially, Fort Wayne had jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Swing came roaring back.
The game was scoreless into the top of the third when the Wizards broke through, rallying for three singles to take a 1-0 lead. One inning later, Javis Diaz led off the top of the fourth by turning on a 1-1 pitch and belting his seventh homer of the year to right-center for a 2-0 advantage.
In the fourth, Fort Wayne doubled the lead. Swing starter Tyler Herron issued a pair of two-out walks to the last two batters he faced before being removed, and an Eric Sogard two-run single against reliever Chuckie Fick put the Wizards out in front, 4-0.
But in the bottom of the fifth, the landscape of the game changed in a hurry. A walk and a hit batsman put two men on base with two away, and DeJesus reached on a strike-three wild pitch to load the bases and keep the inning alive. Though the Swing had just one hit as a team against Wizards' starter Drew Miller up to that point, a flurry of two-out offense would power a six-run rally.
Daryl Jones turned on the first pitch he saw and delivered a two-run double inside of the bag at first two cut the deficit in half. Hill followed with a single to right-center, extending his hitting streak to 12 games while driving in a pair and tying the game at four. The next batter was Christian Reyes, who busted out of an 0-for-17 slump with a two-run blast to right-center that suddenly put the Swing ahead, 6-4.
But in the very next half-inning, Fort Wayne evened the score. With two outs and men at second and third, Cedric Hunter grounded a hard-hit ball through the middle of the infield to plate Justin Baum and Jesus Lopez, tying the game at six runs apiece.
That score remained until the dramatic finish in the ninth.
