Cougars End Trip with Win at Moose Jaw

MOOSE JAW, SK- The Prince George Cougars are heading home with two points. The Cougars earned a 3-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday at Mosaic Place, to cap off their six-game East Division road trip.

Craig Armstrong scored his first WHL goal and what turned out to be the game winning goal late in the second period, as the Cougars snapped a two-game winless streak. Mitch Kohner (6) and Cole Moberg (6) each scored in the first period. Rookie Tyler Brennan earned his fourth victory, stopping 28 of 30 shots in the Cougars' net.

The Warriors winless skid stretched to five games with the loss. Owen Hardy and Eric Alarie scored second period goals for Moose Jaw. Boston Bilous was tagged with the loss, surrendering three goals on 34 shots.

The two teams traded power-play goals in the game. The Cougars went 1-4 on the man advantage and the Warriors finished 1-5.

Kohner opened the scoring early, two-minutes into the first period, to put the Cougars ahead. He found the loose puck out front of the Warriors' net and cut to his backhand before scoring on the goalie's stick side at 2:18. His first goal since November 23rd against Kamloops.

Moberg doubled the Cougars lead late in the opening frame. On the power-play, Moberg walked into the face-off dot before firing a dart over Bilous' shoulder to make it 2-0 at 15:08.

Prince George peppered Moose Jaw for 20 shots in the first 20-minutes.

The Warriors cut into the Cougars' lead in the middle frame. Hardy scored a Warriors' power-play goal eight-minutes into the second to make it 2-1. However, the Cougars didn't take long to respond.

Three minutes after the Warriors made it 2-1, the Cougars' Craig Armstrong restored the two goal lead. Moberg's point-shot was knocked down in front of the Warriors' net, but Armstrong was there to swat in the rebound from the other side of the crease. His first WHL goal made it 3-1 at 11:42

The back-and-forth middle stanza carried on as Moose Jaw answered back with their second of the game inside the final two minutes of the period. Alarie made it a one-goal game again when he scored on a breakaway with less than two minutes left in the second. In all, the two teams combined for three goals in a 10 minute stretch in the middle frame.

There was no scoring in the third period, though Moberg came inches from scoring his second goal of the game. He rifled a slap shot off the cross-bar after rushing down the right wing.

Moose Jaw did get a great opportunity late to tie the game with a power-play but fortunately Brennan and the penalty-kill stood their ground.

Game Notes: The Cougars finish their six-game prairie road trip with a 2-2-1-1 record. Their overall record improved to 12-24-3-4 and their road record got bumped up to 6-11-1-2. Friday, was the Cougars first win in Moose Jaw since a 6-2 victory on January 30th, 2016.

Next Up: The Cougars (12-24-3-4) return home to start a six-game home stand, starting with the Kamloops Blazers on Friday, January 24th.
