ICE Special Teams Help Knock off Hitmen 5-2
January 18, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Winnipeg ICE scored five straight goals, including three on the power play and one shorthanded, to walk away with a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen in the first of a double-header.
The win marks the third straight for the ICE and moved them into sole possession of first in the East Division Standings.
The game-changing moment came late in the first when the Hitmen had a goal waved off after Riley Stotts was called for goaltender interference. Jakin Smallwood put the ICE up 3-0 on that man advantage, which ended up being the game-winner.
Peyton Krebs led the ICE's attack with two goals: first powering a slap shot through Hitmen net-minder Jack McNaughton with the help of a Jakin Smallwood screen, then converting on a shorthanded two-on-one with Michael Milne. Michal Teply also shined, notching his 15th on the powerplay to go along with a beautiful assist from his knees to Nolan Orzeck to open the scoring.
At the other end of the ice, ICE netminder Liam Hughes was sensational, stopping 37 of 39 shots that came his way. Hughes' best work came late in the first when he made a game-changing stop to keep the ICE up by three late in the first.
Stotts scored both of the Hitmen's goals.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow night at the Wayne Fleming Arena at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at winnipegICE.ca
