Red Deer Rebels News Release
LETHBRIDGE - The Red Deer Rebels came within a goal of posting an upset Friday.
Rebels forward Josh Tarzwell roared down the left side, cut to the middle and ripped a shot past 'Canes netminder Bryan Thomson at 6:23 of the third period, a goal that stood up through the remainder of regulation time.
Hurricanes defenceman Alex Cotton, however, got the last laugh for the hosts, scoring at 1:52 of overtime and sending most of the 4,916 Enmax Centre fans happy with a 4-3 Western Hockey League win.
"We did a lot of good things. We had scoring chances we just didn't capitalize on," said Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter. "We managed the puck well for the most part, but turned it over in overtime.
"We had a great chance just before that, on a two on one. But overall we played hard and that's that we want every night."
Cam Hausinger gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead at 8:33 of the first period, banking a shot off a Lethbridge D-man and past Thomson, before former Rebel Brett Davis beat Red Deer netminder Byron Fancy through the five-hole before the period ended.
Jayden Grubbe restored the Rebels lead during a second-period power play, cutting down the right side, shifting back into the low slot and ripping a high shot past Thomson.
Calen Addison brought the 'Canes back to even just over three minutes later, his shot from the top of the right circle finding the high corner on Fancy.
From there, 'Canes captain Ty Prefontaine connected with a point shot late in the second period, and Tarzwell pulled the visitors even with the lone goal of the final frame.
Fancy finished with 32 saves while Thomson made 31 for the 'Canes, who were zero-for-two on the power play. Red Deer was one-for-three with a man advantage.
The Rebels host the Prince Albert Raiders Saturday. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
