
Cougars Eliminated in First Half

Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars (32-34) were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention in the first half of the season with a 10-3 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (31-35) on Thursday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Yoel Yanqui gave the Cougars a first-inning lead with an RBI single. The Kernels responded with eight unanswered runs. Trey Cabbage tied the game with an RBI double in the second. Royce Lewis' RBI double in the third gave the Kernels a 2-1 advantage. Alex Kirilloff's two-run homer in the same inning made it 4-1. Cedar Rapids scored another run in that inning on Cabbage's RBI groundout. David Banuelos doubled home a run in the fifth. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Jose Miranda and Robby Rinn gave the Kernels an 8-1 edge in the sixth.
In the seventh, Renae Martinez led off with a double. Yoel Yanqui followed with a single. A walk to Ernie De La Trinidad loaded the bases with none out. The next two hitters struck out. With Luis Lara at the plate, Cedar Rapids pitcher Bailey Ober tossed a wild pitch, scoring Martinez and making it 8-2.
Alex Kirilloff led off the eighth with a solo homer, his second long ball of the night, to get the run right back for the Kernels. Kirilloff's RBI single in the ninth made it 10-2. The Cougars received an RBI single from Ryan Grotjohn in the ninth inning.
Cougar starter Matt Peacock (3-3) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings. Juan Torres allowed a pair of unearned runs in 2.1 innings out of the pen. Abraham Almonte allowed two runs in two innings of relief.
Kernels' right-hander Baily Ober (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs over seven innings. Ober retired 16 straight batters from the second through the sixth. Calvin Faucher tossed the final two frames, allowing one run on five hits.
