June 14, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-South Bend starting pitcher Erich Uelmen combined with two relievers on an eight-hit shutout as the Cubs defeated the Dayton Dragons 2-0 on Thursday night to avoid a sweep of the three-game series. The Dragons had won the first two contests in a low-scoring set as the winning team scored three runs or less in all three games.
Dragons starting pitcher Hunter Greene (1-5) worked four and one-third innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with no walks and three strikeouts. He was charged with the loss, throwing 86 pitches in the outing. Both runs against Greene came on the final batter he faced in the fifth inning.
The Dragons did not advance a runner past second base in the game. Their best chance to score came in the second inning when Hendrik Clementina and John Sansone both singled to start the inning, but the next three batters were retired with the runners stranded at first and second. The Dragons went 0 for 5 with men in scoring position.
South Bend scored both runs in the fifth inning. Jared Young delivered a ground ball double down the first base line to bring in runners from second and third with one out.
Dragons reliever Aaron Quillen had a good outing in relief of Greene. He worked three scoreless innings, and Wendolyn Bautista replaced Quillen to get the final two outs with a runner at third.
Clementina led the Dragons offensively with two hits including a double. Mitch Piatnik also had a double.
The Dragons fell to 31-34 in the first half with three games to play. South Bend improved to 34-32 as they beat the Dragons for the first time in six meetings this season.
Notes: Dragons outfielder Andy Sugilio was placed on the disabled list on Thursday. Reshard Munroe arrived from extended spring training to take his place.
