Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The Lansing Lugnuts (40-27) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the ninth, only to see J.J. Berardi's tenth-inning RBI single give the Lake County Captains (29-38) a 4-3 win on Thursday night at Classic Park.
The Lugnuts finished their season high 13-game, 14-day road trip with a 5-8 record, culminating with a three-game sweep at the hands of the Captains.
That said, the Lugnuts also emerged from the road trip with an Eastern Division first-half playoff berth, and will challenge first-half division champion Bowling Green in a first round best-two-of-three series in September. The Eastern Division's two other playoff teams will be determined in the second half.
Matt Morgan's first home run of the year, leading off the third inning, was the Lugnuts' only run through the first eight innings.
With one out in the top of the ninth, the Lugnuts came to life against Lake County left-hander Zack Draper. Brock Lundquist singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Yeltsin Gudiño followed with a single off shortstop Ernie Clement's glove, sending Lundquist to third. Brandon Grudzielanek then launched a deep fly to right that bounced over the wall on one hop, scoring Lundquist to trim the lead to 3-2. Norberto Obeso walked to load the bases, causing the Captains to call in right-hander Dace Kime. Morgan came through again, drawing a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the game-tying run.
Kime (Win, 2-1) recovered to strike out both Reggie Pruitt and Kevin Vicuña to strand the bases loaded, and then set the side down in order in the tenth to strand bonus runner Vicuña at second.
Lugnuts reliever Claudio Custodio (Loss, 0-2) held the Captains off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings in relief of All-Star Maverik Buffo, but a Ulysses Cantu sacrifice set up Berardi's opposite-field single to end the game.
In a no-decision, Buffo tied a career high with seven innings, striking out five, walking none, and allowing six hits and three runs (two earned).
Gudiño and Grudzielanek each went 2-for-4 in the losing cause. Ryan Noda finished 0-for-5, ending his 12-game winning streak.
The Lugnuts have three home games remaining in the first half, welcoming the South Bend Cubs to town with Family Faith Night with LAFCU Fireworks at 7:05 p.m. on June 15th, Star Wars Night with LAFCU Fireworks at 7:05 p.m. on June 16th, and a Father's Day Delta Dental Kids Day with a special Jersey Giveaway at 1:05 p.m. on June 17th!
