Cubs Take Series Finale against Dayton 2-0
June 14, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: Behind two RBI from Midwest League All-Star Jared Young, and another dominant pitching performance from right hander Erich Uelmen, the South Bend Cubs blanked the Dayton Dragons 2-0 on Thursday night at Four Winds Field.
After dropping the first two games of the series, the Cubs responded well in game three by salvaging the final game of the homestand. Like the prior two games of the series, Thursday was low scoring and one highlight reel play was the difference. Tonight, it was the Cubs turn to get the last laugh.
With the only runs of the game being scored in the 5th inning, the Cubs finally got to 18-year-old Dayton starter Hunter Greene after he tossed the first four innings scoreless. With two runners on, South Bend RBI leader Jared Young came to the plate. On a ground ball roped down the first base line past first baseman Montrell Marshall, Young plated two runs.
Chris Singleton and Christian Donahue scored Thursday's South Bend runs. Both scored easily on the base hit by Young. The run support backed up starter Erich Uelmen, who again was spectacular.
In 6.2 scoreless innings, Uelmen struck out five batters after setting a career high in strikeouts last week at West Michigan. The right hander out of Las Vegas has now come all the way back to get his record back to .500. Uelmen is now 5-5 on the year with a 3.51 ERA.
The bullpen backed up the starting pitching as Manuel Rondon earned the hold, and Brian Glowicki picked up the save. Combined, South Bend pitching struck out six Dragons.
With the win, the Cubs improve to 34-32 as the first half is coming to a close. Tonight was the final home game of the first half. Now, South Bend will leave on a three game road trip to face the Lansing Lugnuts in Michigan this weekend.
The three games against Lansing will close the first half and then the Midwest League will take its three-day All-Star break. After the break is finished, the Cubs will open the second half on the road in Dayton to take on the Dragons.
First pitch from Lansing tomorrow night is set for 7:05 p.m.
