Kane County Cougars News Release
South Bend, IN - Todd Johnson raced home from second base with the winning run on an infield single in the 10th inning and the Kane County Cougars held on for a 3-2 victory over the South Bend SilverHawks to even this series at a game apiece. Johnson tallied the winning marker when Chad Boyd's high bouncer eluded Hawks pitcher Ramon Sanchez and second baseman Manuel Ferrer's throw to first was late.
South Bend had sent the game into extra innings when pinch hitter Tracy Hendricks coaxed a walk out of Cougars reliever Brad Kilby with two out and the bases loaded in the ninth. That run spoiled a solid outing for starter Trey Shields who had pitched 6.1 innings of four hit ball retiring 13 of 14 batters in one stretch.
After spotting the Hawks a run in the first inning, Kane County tied the game in the second when Steve Kleen's single scored Anthony Recker who had tripled. The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the sixth after Todd Johnson tripled and Justin Sellers hit a sacrifice fly.
South Bend threatened in the eighth inning but Pedro Ciriaco was cut down trying to steal home in a bases loaded situation with two out.
The Cougars and the Silver Hawks will meet in game three of the series Saturday night beginning at 7:00 PM. Vince Mazzaro will battle unbeaten right hander Vincent Bongiovanni.
