West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Luke French took a no hitter into the top of the ninth inning, but Dayton lead off man Mike Griffin doubled down the left field line for the Dragons' only hit in a 4-0 Whitecaps victory.
French retired the next three batters to complete a one-hit shutout effort. He is the third Whitecaps pitcher to toss a complete game this season. Burke Badenhop and Ramon Garcia have two complete games each. Garcia threw a rain-shortened, five inning one hitter at Wisconsin on April 29 and both of his complete games were shutouts.
West Michigan has pitched nine shutouts as a team this season.
Matt Joyce increased his team leading total of RBI to 62 on a ground out to first base in the first inning that scored Will Rhymes and put the Whitecaps in front, 1-0.
In the second, Mark Haske delivered an RBI single and Jeramy Laster scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt executed by Will Rhymes was West Michigan moved in front, 3-0.
Laster singled through a drawn-in infield in the sixth to drive in the âCaps final run of the night.
Justin Justice in left made a diving catch to rob Craig Tatum of a hit in the second inning and Pedro Cotto dove to snare a line drive at first off the bat of Jay Bruce. Each helped preserved the no-hit effort.
