Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Jose Limonta blasted a pair of home runs, including a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning that led the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (9-19, 36-62) to a 6-5 win over the Burlington Bees (12-16, 47-48) at Community Field tonight. Limonta also had a double and drove in five to help the Rattlers even this at a game apiece.
The game started with an unusual play as Kevin Reynolds doubled down the left field line, but was called out on appeal for missing first base. Later in the inning, the Rattlers had runners on first and second and two outs when Kuo Hui Lo swung at strike three in the dirt from starter Matt Kniginyzky. The ball bounced off the chest protector of Brady Everett and rolled up the first base line. Lo beat the play to try to get him at first and Saunders raced all the way in to score. It was the first run allowed in the first inning by Kniginyzky in 17 starts this season. The Bees came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jose Duarte led off with a single. Josh Johnson bunted back to the mound and Rattlers starter Paul Fagan made a good throw that would' ve gotten Duarte at second, but the shortstop Chris Minaker missed the ball for an error. Mario Lisson drove in Duarte with a single to right-center and Miguel Vega singled to load the bases and set up Everett for a sacrifice fly.
The Rattlers took the lead back on Limonta's first home run, a two-run shot, in the top of the third. Kniginyzky would come out of the game with two one and two outs in the fourth and Rayner Oliveros stranded the two runners by deflecting a line drive from Reynolds to Johnson at second who made the throw to first for the final out of the inning. The Rattlers added a run against Oliveros in the fifth. With runners on first and second and no outs, Limonta bounced a double down the left field line to drive in Mike Saunders. Saunders finished with three hits and scored three runs. The Rattlers led 4-2 and had runners at second and third with no outs, but Oliveros struck out the next two batters and got a groundout to end the inning.
The Bees took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning against Fagan. Jeff Howell drew a leadoff walk, Everett singled, Jeremy Jirschele moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, before Omar Pena blasted a three-run homer over both walls in left for his first hit at Community Field as a member of the Bees to put the Bees ahead 5-4.
In the top of the seventh, Lo reached on a two-out single and Oliveros was replaced by Chris Hayes. Lo stole second and scored on a single by Adam Moore to tie the game. The next two batters singled, but the inning ended when Duarte threw out Moore at the plate from centerfield. Eliezer Garcia got two outs in the eighth before allowing a hit. Kraig Schambough (2-5) finished the eighth, but gave up Limonta's homer in the ninth for the loss. Harold Williams (3-4) struck out five in the seventh and eighth innings to get the win for Wisconsin. Brian Kappel struck out two in the ninth for his second save.
The Bees and Rattlers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Nick Allen (5-3, 3.14) will start for Wisconsin against RH Chris Nicoll (4-6, 2.70) for the Bees. The gates open at 6:00 for Family Night featuring $14 family admission and a bike giveaway from JD Byrider and Louisa Communications. It's also Western Illinois night with $3 admission for anyone with an Illinois ID, Reading Club Night, and after the game all ladies 18 and older can participate in a "Diamond Dig" to search for a diamond ring buried in the infield dirt.
