MWL1 Cedar Rapids Kernels

Rally falls one short in 4-3 loss to Swing

July 21, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels came up one run short in a ninth inning rally as they fell to the Swing of the Quad Cities, 4-3, Thursday night in Davenport. The loss drops the Kernels to 15-12 and into a log jam for second place in the MWL West.

Cedar Rapids took a 1-0 lead in the first as Madison Edwards singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mark Trumbo walked to put runners on second and third. Dallas Morris singled to score Edwards from second, but Trumbo was thrown out trying to go from first to third on the play.

The Swing tied it in the bottom of the inning and the score remained tied until the top of the seventh as Edwards walked and went to third on a Hainley Statia single. With Trumbo at the plate, a balk was called on Matt Trent, scoring Edwards from third.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Jose Martinez hit a lead-off home run off Hill to tie the score. Then, a single by Chad Gabriel and a sac bunt had a runner at second with one out. Chris Howell came on for Hill and got Shane Robinson to fly out. But back-to-back doubles by Casey Rowlett and Jon Jay scored two runs to make it 4-2 Swing.

The Kernels got off to a good start in the ninth as Flint Wipke was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Josh Davies single. A wild pitch let both runners move up a base and when Madison Edwards drew a walk, the Kernels had the bases loaded with no one out.

Larry Infante lifted a sac fly to center to score Wipke, but the runners couldn't advance on Statia's fly ball to left and Trumbo was called out on strikes to end the game.

Kernels starter Andy Hill (3-6) was the tough-luck loser, going 6-1/3 innings and giving up seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Matt Trent (3-3) picked up the win in relief of starter Trey Hearne and Chris Perez worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to get his second save.

Even though the Kernels only had six hits, good plate discipline let them draw seven walks from Quad City pitchers. Mark Trumbo drew three on the night. Madison Edwards was the only Kernel with more than one hit.

The Kernels look to bounce back on Friday night at JOD as Robert Mosebach (8-4) is scheduled to start against Victor Moreno (0-1). Game time is 7 pm and the game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com , or across eastern Iowa on 1450 KMRY.
