South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Bend - The Marines say, "Leave no man behind." Friday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks could not live up to that credo, leaving eight men on base, with seven-of the eight-men stranded in innings seven through nine as the Hawks dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kane County Cougars.
The Hawks and Cougars were tied through five innings. The Hawks scored a run in the first on Will Crouch's RBI single, and that stood until the second. Anthony Recker reached on a one out triple and scored one batter later on an RBI single by Steve Kleen.
The starting pitchers for the two teams were outstanding. Hawks starter Kyle Wright, after allowing the second inning run, was able to retire seven straight from the third to the fifth inning, while Kane County's Trey Shields downed eight in a row from the third to the start of the fifth.
In the sixth, the Cougars gained the lead. Todd Johnson tripled and scored when the following batter, Justin Sellers, scored Johnson with a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, the Hawks knocked on the door, but left runners at first and third. In the ninth, the Hawks loaded the bases. With Ricardo Sosa and with two out, Pedro Ciriaco attempted to steal home and was thrown out by pitcher Robert Semerano.
The Hawks tied the game in the ninth when Frank Curreri scored on a bases loaded walk, but the duo of Johnson and Sellers struck again in the tenth.
Todd Johnson started the inning by reaching on a free pass. Sellers sacrificed him to second and Johnson scored on an infield single to second base by Chad Boyd, for the Cougars 3-2 lead.
The Silver Hawks (52-41, 19-8) continue their four game series Friday night with the Cougars. First pitch is slated for 7PM. Saturday is Meijer Family Fun Night. Fans can go to participating area Meijer stores and pick up a coupon good for four box seats, four hot dogs, four Pepsi products and a program for $24.
