Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Those who listen to the daily Swing of the Quad Cities broadcast on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will hear a new voice on Tuesday, July 25. Former sports talk radio commentator Greg Talerico will join Swing announcer Ben Chiswick during the fourth inning as Quad Cities faces Southwest Michigan.
Talerico, who has been in a wheelchair since he was 14, is part of the Winning Wheels program, which provides encouragement, counseling, and opportunities for individuals confined to wheelchairs.
Talerico began his career in radio when he was 23 years old in 1985. Since making his entrance into the radio business, Talerico has received quite a bit of acclaim and has been the focus of several stories and magazine articles. "As a kid I always watched baseball on TV and I wanted to be a baseball player. It is something I have a passion for. It's the greatest game on earth," Talerico said. But he also knew from a young age that becoming a baseball player was probably not in the cards, considering his disability - so he decided that a career in broadcast would be a way for him to become involved with baseball.
Beginning in the 1980's and into the 1990's, Talerico teamed with radio personality Dave Blackwell on Talk Radio KISN, a sports talk show out of Salt Lake City. He worked alongside Blackwell for 18 years, during which time he had his own segment, "A chat with Greg."
The first pitch for Tuesday's game is scheduled for Noon with coverage beginning on WKBF AM-1270 at 11:45 a.m.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will make up Friday's postponed game against Cedar Rapids with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. RHP Donnie Smith will take the mound in game one opposite RHP Robert Mosebach (7-4, 3.13). The second game will feature RHP Victor Moreno (0-1, 6.75) against Tommy Mendoza (8-5, 3.81). Coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 4:45 p.m.
NEXT HOMESTAND: After an eight-game road trip the Swing will return to Davenport and play eight games in nine days at home. The first series of the homestand will begin on Saturday, August 5, as the Swing face Clinton at 7:00 p.m. in game one of a four-game series. After one day off on Wednesday, the Swing will start another four game series against West Michigan on Thursday.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The first 800 fans who come to the Friday's contest will get a Clyde the Orangutan Bobblehead Doll thanks to US Cellular. Post-game fireworks will keep the crowd at the park late on Saturday, July 22, courtesy of KWQC and Star 93.5, and Sunday's game will be a Mix 96 Family Fun Day, with a 2 p.m. game time. Also, the first 400 children will get a collectible Swing baseball courtesy of New Choices Inc.
