Devil Rays Give Valiant Effort on Medieval Night

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays fell behind early and their comeback attempt fell a bit short. The Fort Wayne Wizards took their second consecutive game at C.O. Brown on Friday night by a score of 9-5. Over 2,100 fans came out to support the Rays on Medieval Night and to enjoy the post game fireworks.

What started out as a pitchers duel turned into a slugfest in the sixth inning. Rays starter Wade Davis tossed 5.2 innings. In the first five frames he limited the Wizards to two hits and no runs. His fate turned in the sixth as he gave up four hits and four earned runs. He struck out four and walked four in the contest.

Joel Santo took the start for Fort Wayne and hurled seven frames. The Rays tagged him for a run in the bottom of the fifth when Neil Walton drove in Chris Cunningham with a single to center field.

In the seventh inning the Rays scored two more times against Santo. Garrett Groce led off with a single to center field and Cunningham drove him home with a double down the right field line. The next batter Christian Lopez grounded out and Cunningham moved to third. He would eventually score off of a wild pitch. Santo finished with one strikeout with seven hits and three earned runs. He has a season record of 6-6 with three of the wins coming against the Rays.

Jeff Kamrath entered for relief of Davis in the sixth inning. He chucked 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit. Kamrath struck out three batters and walked one.

Chris Kelly came in for the eighth inning and the Wizards bats got hot. Kelly got a strikeout but gave up two hits and three earned runs.

In the bottom half of the eighth the Rays rallied against Eddie Pena for three hits and two runs. A Lopez strikeout left two men on base and ended the inning. The Rays also left two men on in the ninth have now dropped to 10-18 in the second half.

The Rays and Wizards square off again on Saturday night at 7:05. Saturday night the Devil Rays will give away a used car to one lucky fan. There are fireworks after the game presented by Denso. Q-106.5 is also sponsoring the Saturday night's festivities.
