Dayton Dragons News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps (21-7, 62-33) beat the Dayton Dragons (13-14, 48-49), in the second game of the four games series at Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday night 4-0, but Whitecaps starter Luke French (WP, 9-4) was the story. French took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Dragons, where the bid was turned away by Dayton's Mike Griffin with a lead off double. That would be all the offense the Dragons could muster as the Miami Valley's Team fell one game below .500 at 13-14 in the second half with the loss.
As it turned out, French did not need much offense at all. The Caps got the left hander all the run support he would need in the bottom half of the first inning. After Will Rhymes and Pedro Cotto opened up the game with back-to-back singles off Dragons starter Carlos Fisher (LP, 8-5), a double steal moved the runners to second and third. Matt Joyce picked up his 62nd run batted in of 2006 with a grounder to first base.
West Michigan added two more runs off Fisher in the second inning, this time starting the rally with one down. A single and a walk put runners at first and second for Mark Haske. Haske picked up an RBI single to give the âCaps a 2-0 lead. The fourth run of the night came home one batter later when Rhymes laid down a suicide squeeze for a 3-0 advantage.
In the early going the only Dragons hitter to reach base was Gerardo Cabrera who got on board in the top of the third when Haske misplayed a grounder to third for a two base error. The southpaw gave up three walks on the night, two to Bradley Key, in the sixth and the eighth innings and to B.J. Szymanski in the eighth.
West Michigan added a run in the sixth inning off Jose Rojas (ND) to push the lead to 4-0. Mike Holliman singled and stole second and moved to third when Craig Tatum's throw went into centerfield. Jeramy Laster knocked home Holliman with a base hit to left.
Dayton continues the four game series at West Michigan with a 7:00 PM first pitch on Saturday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry all the action live beginning with the Dragons Magazine Show at 6:00 PM. The Dragons Pre Game Show will follow at 6:30 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan.
