Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - An early 6-0 lead quickly got away from the Kane County Cougars on Monday night as they ended up with a 10-9 loss to the Peoria Chiefs, who finished off a three-game sweep at O'Brien Field.
Justin Trapp doubled to begin the contest and scored on a groundout from Jorge Bonifacio to put the Cougars (33-31) up by one. They added five more in the second with Yowill Espinal singling home Michael Antonio, Tim Ferguson driving home a pair with a knock, Bonifacio bouncing a run-scoring single to left, and Lane Adams doing the same.
Peoria (32-32) roared back for five of their own in the bottom of the second against Aaron Brooks. Paul Hoilman homered while Sergio Burruel doubled home a run. Pin-Chieh Chen and Zeke DeVoss connected on consecutive triples to bring in another three. Brooks coughed up a dozen hits in 4.2 innings while allowing nine runs. Peoria starter Gerardo Concepcion also surrendered nine runs in his four frames.
Bonifacio's two-run homer in the fourth put the Cougars up, 9-7, but Burruel cracked a two-run double to tie the game in the fifth. It stayed tied until the ninth as the Chiefs' bullpen combined for five scoreless innings including Hunter Cervenka (1-0), who worked the ninth. Jonathan Dooley (2-1) went 3.2 innings without giving up a run, but he hit Hoilman with one out in the ninth and committed a throwing error to put Hoilman at third. Dustin Geiger, who also homered during the contest, cracked a single into left, scoring Hoilman with the game-winner.
The Cougars play the opener of a three-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night from Modern Woodmen Park at 7:00.
