CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels turned five double plays in addition to two home runs in a series-clinching 6-2 victory over Clinton on Monday afternoon.

Cedar Rapids (28-36) pitching induced groundball on groundball from LumberKings (23-40) hitters, who did manage 10 hits. A 4-6-3 double play in the second inning bookended a 4-3 double play in the seventh inning -with three other twin killings in between. Those quelled almost every Clinton rally, along with seven strikeouts for Cedar Rapids pitchers. Only four LumberKings outs came via fly balls.

Kaleb Cowart, the Midwest League leader in runs batted in, helped bring home a run in the first inning, even though he won't be credited with the RBI. Cowart was caught in a run down on a pick off throw, but Ryan Jones on third base recognized the infielders' preoccupation with Cowart and snuck home for an early 1-0 lead.

After one in the first, the Kernels got two in the second when Wendell Soto hit his fourth and fifth RBI of the home-stand. With Andy Workman on third base and Matt Scioscia on second base, Soto hit a 2-out, opposite-way single to right field to push the Kernels lead to 3-0.

Two long home runs finished the Kernels scoring. After a Workman lead-off single in the fourth inning, Matthew Scioscia hit his 2nd homer of the season onto the porch in left field.

Two innings later, Frazier Hall moved into a tie for the team lead in home runs with a well hit fly ball over the right field signs. Hall has 8 this season, as does Cowart.

Eswarlin Jimenez went 4 innings and allowed 4 hits while striking out 4 to start the game for Cedar Rapids. Winning pitcher Frank De Julio (3-1) lasted 3 1/3 innings, before Carmine Giardina finished the final 1 2/3 innings of the game for the Kernels. Giardina struck out the final two hitters of the afternoon.

Midwest League all-star Jordan Shipers (2-3) took the loss for Clinton.

The Kernels now host the Burlington Bees for a three game series. Tuesday night's game begins at 6:35 p.m. at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
