
Chiefs Extend Winning Streak to Seven With Walk-off Win

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs erased a six-run deficit and extended their winning streak to seven games with a 10-9 walk-off win over the Kane County Cougars on Monday night. The win puts the Chiefs at .500 for the first time since the middle of April at 32-32 heading into tomorrow's series opener at Beloit. Peoria is four games behind Beloit in the Western Division Wild Card race with six games left in the half.
The Cougars got on the board early against Gerardo Concepcion in the top of the first. Justin Trapp got things started with a double to center and moved to third on a ground out by Daniel Mateo. Jorge Bonifacio drove in Trapp with a ground out to second giving Kane County an early 1-0 lead.
Kane County added to their lead in the top of the second. Concepcion walked Michael Antonio and two batters later catcher Kenny Swab lined a single to left field. Pin-Chieh Chen had an error an error in left which moved both runners up a base. Yowill Espinal singled on a ground ball to left bringing home Antonio. Tim Ferguson singled up the middle to bring home two more runs making the score 4-0 in favor of the Cougars. Trapp flied to right for the second out but the rally continued with three consecutive run scoring singles. Bonifacio singled home two of the runs and Lane Adams drove in Mateo for a 6-0 Kane County lead. The inning finally came to an end after a spectacular diving catch by Zeke DeVoss saving another run.
In the bottom of the second the Chiefs came storming back. Paul Hoilman led things off with his fifth homer of the year to left field, trimming the Cougars' lead to 6-1. Dustin Geiger continued the rally with a single which was followed by five straight hits. Oliver Zapata singled Geiger to second and Sergio Burruel doubled in a run. Chen tripled home two runs which cut the score to 6-4. DeVoss made it back-to-back triples which scored Chen before the inning ended with a score of 6-5.
Kane County added to their lead in the top of the third allowing the first two batters to reach base with a leadoff walk to Dean Espy and a double by Swab. Espinal collected his second RBI of the game with a grounder to short plating Espy for a 7-5 lead.
The Chiefs wasted little time in the bottom of the third. Wes Darvill lined a base hit to left and Geiger hit his first home run of the season into the berm in left field to knot the score at seven a piece. Burruel got his second hit of the ball game before the inning came to a close.
The tie game didn't last long in the top of the fourth. Mateo led things off with his second single and Bonifacio sent a 1-0 Concepcion offering over the fence in left to give the Cougars the lead again. Adams singled following the homer and Antonio grounded into a double play. Another walk to Espy put a runner on first but the inning ended with an easy fly ball to center and Kane County again had the lead, 9-7.
The bottom of the fifth started with Hoilman singling and advanced to second on as Geiger chopped a base hit over Mateo's head at third. Both runners got into scoring position when Zapata grounded out to second. With two outs, Burruel drove a full-count, two out pitch from Aaron Brooks into left center scoring two and tying the contest 9-9.
The Chiefs started the bottom of the ninth with a one-out hit by pitch by reliever Jonathan Dooley to Hoilman. Darvill grounded to the pitcher who tossed the ball into centerfield allowing Hoilman to advance to third. On a one strike offering from Dooley, Geiger grounded a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Hoilman and giving the Chiefs a walk-off 10-9 victory.
Concepcion allowed a season-high nine runs on 12 hits over four innings of work. The lefty walked three and struck out one in the no-decision. Sheldon McDonald fired three shutout innings and struck out two with two hits allowed. Luis Liria walked two in one hitless inning. Hunter Cervenka (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect inning and a strikeout.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Dustin Geiger (3B) - Geiger had four hits on the night including a home run and the game winning base hit in the bottom of the ninth. He collected three RBI and finished 4-for-5.
