Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Kernels were shut out for the first time this season in a 4-0 loss to the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night in front of a season-high 4.582 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernels offense stranded a total of 10 runners on base, went 1-13 with runners in scoring position, and struck out 14 times. The best scoring chance for Cedar Rapids came in the fourth inning as the team loaded the bases with no outs after three straight singles. However, a pop up, strikeout, and fielder's choice ended the inning with no runs scoring.
Jose Berrios (3-1) took a hard-luck loss, going 6.2 innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out five and walking none. Berrios made the defensive play of the night when he sprinted off the mound to foul territory on the third base side and slid to catch a ball hit off of the bat of Yaniel Cabezas in the seventh inning.
The game was scoreless until that point in the seventh inning when Kane County plated a pair to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs Gioskar Amaya was hit by a pitch. He stole second base to get into scoring position. Oliver Zapata's hard grounder was back-handed by Jorge Polanco at second base. Zapata beat the throw, and Amaya rounded third base and scored without a throw for the game's first run. Pin-Chieh Chen then doubled, and Zapata scored on an Adam Brett Walker throwing error from right field.
The Cougars hit solo home runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Rock Shoulders homered off Josue Montanez to put Kane County up 3-0. Oliver Zapata's home run came in the ninth inning off of Josh Burris, extending the Cougars lead to 4-0.
Pierce Johnson (2-3) struck out nine over six innings for the win, allowing six hits while walking one. Justin Amlung pitched two scoreless frames while striking out three, and Jeff Antigua pitched the final inning, picking up two punch outs.
