Beloit Sky Carp News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - Bruce Maxwell lined a go-ahead, two-run single into right-center in the top of the ninth inning for the Beloit Snappers in a 5-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in Midwest League action on Saturday night at Modern Woodman Park.
The Snappers are now 23-18 and are in a tie with the River Bandits, who are also 23-18, for the Western Division wild card spot.
The top of the ninth began with Quad Cities clinging to a 3-2 advantage and John Neely (1-2) pitching. Consecutive singles by Christopher Bostick and Sam Roberts got the inning going and both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout. An intentional walk loaded the bases, but the next batter struck out. That's when Maxwell (3-5, 2 RBI) came up and slashed a single just past the dive of second baseman Austin Elkins and both Bostick and Roberts dented home to put Beloit ahead. Renato Nunez was up next and provided insurance with an RBI single. Derek DeYoung (3-1) got the win for throwing four scoreless innings, including the ninth.
Rio Ruiz provided the game's first run, as his first inning single scored Carlos Correa (1-4, RBI, run) for a 1-0 lead. Starter Vince Voiro limited the damage there, however, as he induced a 1-2-3 double play to escape a bases loaded jam. The River Bandits increased their lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Teoscar Hernandez scorched an RBI triple down the left field line and was subsequently driven in by a Correa single.
In the eighth, Beloit had their chance to get back in the game, loading the bases with nobody out, and they did just that. They got on the board on a double play and, two batters later, Matt Olson dropped an RBI single into short left, making it a 3-2 game. The next inning, the Snappers would finish what they started. Beloit will turn to RHP Austin House (0-3, 3.31) on Sunday in what will be the third game of this series as RHP Daniel Minor (3-2, 4.75 ERA) starts for Quad Cities. The teams will play a matinee, with 2:00pm the scheduled start time.
