Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs were up 7-5 going into the ninth inning, but the Clinton LumberKings scored five runs in their last at bat to top the Chiefs 10-7 Saturday night. The loss, in front of a season high 6,643 fans, dropped the Chiefs to 20-20 this season and ended a five-game home winning streak.
The LumberKings struck first with a run in the first inning. Kyle Helisek walked Janelfry Zorilla, who put himself in scoring position by stealing second base. Patrick Kivlehan singled to center to score Zorilla, putting Clinton up 1-0 after a half an inning.
The Chiefs answered with a pair of runs against Victor Sanchez in the bottom of the first inning. Breyvic Valera and Ildemaro Vargas started the frame with back-to-back singles, with Valera reaching third on Vargas's base knock. With Alex Mejia batting Sanchez attempted to pick off Vargas only to miss first baseman Taylor Ard and chuck the ball down the first base line. Valera scored and Vargas moved to second base. After Mejia popped out and Jordan Walton flew out, Patrick Wisdom smacked a triple to right field to score Vargas. Casey Rasmus caped the inning with a single to plate Wisdom, putting the Chiefs up 3-1 after the first inning.
Clinton scored runs in both the second and third innings, both on homers, to tie the game at 3-3. Marcus Littlewood hit solo home run to left in the top of the second to cut the Chiefs lead to one run, and with two outs Zorilla homered in the third to tie the game.
Clinton got two more runs in the fifth inning. Ard singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a throwing error by Wisdom. Ketel Marte reached on a single, moving Ard to third. Marte was picked off trying to steal, but Ard advanced home a throwing error by Jordan Walton. Zorrilla then singled and two batters later was driven in on a Kivlehan double to extend the LumberKings lead to 5-3.
After stranding a pair of runners in the sixth inning the Chiefs scored one in the seventh, but could have had more. Valera started the inning with a bunt single, and moved to third on a Vargas double. With Mejia batting, a passed ball scored Valera. With Vargas on third, however, Alex Mejia, Jordan Walton and Wisdom were all retired to end the Chiefs threat, making the score 5-4 LumberKings led after seven innings.
The Chiefs scored three runs in the eighth inning after Rasmus was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Carson Kelly laid down a bunt, but pitcher Matt Vedo tossed the ball into centerfield and Rasmus was safe at second. Charlie Tilson moved Rasmus and Kelly up a bag with a sacrifice bunt, and Nick Martini singled to centerfield to score Rasmus, and Valera did the same to move Martini to third and score Kelly. With Vargas batting, a wild pitch by Vedo scored Martini and Valera was thrown out trying to advance to third. The Chiefs lead 7-5 after the eighth inning.
The LumberKings came back with huge top of the ninth inning scoring five runs in the frame. After a walk and an infield single, Tim Lopes laid down a bunt to Chiefs pitcher Samuel Tuivailala. The Chiefs hurler threw the ball into left field, scoring Ard and Ketel Marte. After a pair of LumberKings were hit by pitches, Jordy Lara doubled off newly inserted Corey Baker. Lopes, Dario Pizzano and Kivlehan all scored to give the LumberKings at 10-7 lead. The Chiefs went in order in the ninth against Clinton closer Grady Wood.
