Burlington Bees News Release
Wendell Soto delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th and the Burlington Bees defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 on Saturday night at Community Field.
The Bees (14-24) had not won a game this season when allowing five or more runs and had only one win in 10 chances when playing one-run games, but that was all thrown out the window on Saturday against the Rattlers (19-20).
Chevy Clarke reached to the start the 11th inning when Chris McFarland dropped a routine pop up. Zac Livingston tried to bunt Clarke over, but Ryan Gibbard (1-4) threw four of the five pitches out of the zone to walk Livingston. Kevin Moesquit reached on a fielder's choice, as Gibbard's throw to second base on a bunt attempt was late. The bases were loaded for Wendell Soto, who lined a ball into right field to win the game. Soto had a fantastic night for the Bees, going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.
The Bees took an early 2-0 off of Eric Semmelhack, scoring two runs in the first. Sherman Johnson led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single by Kyle Johnson. Alfredo Rodriguez threw the ball wide of first, allowing Sherman Johnson to score and Kyle Johnson to go to second. Johnson advanced to third on a fly out by Wade Hinkle and scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael Bolaski.
Aaron Newcomb held onto that lead until the third, when Orlando Arcia hit his first home run of the year to bring the Rattlers within one. The Bees extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third on a RBI double by Sherman Johnson and a RBI single from Kyle Johnson. Sherman Johnson finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, while Kyle Johnson was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Wisconsin scored a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh to get within one again, but Burlington scored a run in the seventh on back-to-back singles by Moesquit and Soto. Moesquit went to second on a passed ball and scored on the Soto single.
Cam Bedrosian came on in the eighth and allowed two runs to score on a Mitch Haniger solo home run and a Clint Coulter RBI single. The score was tied 5-5 until the Bees won on a walk-off single in the 11th. Joey Krebiel (2-3) pitched a perfect eleventh to earn the win.
Burlington will play Wisconsin in the third game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. It will be Community Basket Day at the ballpark, and the first pitch will be thrown by Miss Iowa, Mariah Cary, and "Catfish" star, Nev Schulman. Ryan Crowley will take the mound against Tyler Wagner.
