May 18, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA "" The Clinton LumberKings took a 10-7 comeback victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday night. Clinton scored five runs in the top of the ninth to even the series at one game apiece.
Peoria erased an early 1-0 LumberKings lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Clinton starter Victor Sanchez was slow out of the gates, allowing four hits in the opening frame including a two-run triple by Patrick Wisdom.
The Chiefs lead did not last long, as the LumberKings used the long ball to tie the game. Marcus Littlewood hit a solo blast in the second inning, his first of the season, to make it 3-2. Janelfry Zorrilla tied it up in the third with a laser-like solo shot, his second home run of the year.
Clinton broke the 3-3 tie with the help of a pair of errors by Peoria. The LumberKings scored two unearned runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
The LumberKings' bullpen could not hold the lead for Victor Sanchez. Blake Holovach surrendered a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4. In the eighth, Matt Vedo struggled with his command. The right-hander hit a batter and made a throwing error to fuel the rally. Four consecutive singles from the Chiefs pushed across three runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
However, a sloppy ninth inning by Peoria allowed the LumberKings to retake the lead. Clinton scored five runs in the ninth with the help of two hit batters and a throwing error. With the game tied and the bases loaded, Jordy Lara ripped a bases-clearing double to the gap in right-center to establish a 10-7 lead.
Grady Wood put the finishing touches on the LumberKings win with a perfect ninth. Wood picked up his sixth save of the season on his 23rd birthday. Vedo got the win, improving to 4-1 on the year, while Sam Tuivailala was tagged with the loss for Peoria.
Zorrilla and Littlewood led the LumberKings' offense, each with a multi-hit game and a solo home run. Patrick Kivlehan added a 2-for-4 night with a double and two RBIs.
The LumberKings and Chiefs will play game three of their four -game set on Sunday afternoon. Clinton sends left-hander Tyler Pike (2-3, 2.81) to the mound against Peoria right-hander Josh Lucas (0-3, 6.28). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM CT.
