Cooper and Garcia Placed on DL

(Reading, PA)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that OF James Cooper and RHP Christian Garcia have both been placed on the Disabled List. Cooper was placed on the Disabled List retroactive to June 10th.

Cooper is hitting .259 with a home run and 20 RBI in 38 games. He has hit in 14 of 16 games, and has a .327 BA (17 x 52) in his last 16 games with 11 runs and 13 RBI. In 2008, he split the season between Tampa (High-A) and Trenton. He hit .232 with 17 RBI in 52 games for Trenton. He had a .311 BA in 66 games for Tampa with a home run and 22 RBI. He was selected by the Yankees in the 9th round of the 2005 draft.

Garcia is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in five starts for the Thunder. He has compiled 24 strikeouts and 17 walks in 25 1/3 innings. Opponents are only hitting .172 against him. He entered the season as the 17th rated prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. In 2008, Garcia started the season with Tampa and made 10 starts. He had a 4-2 record and a 2.90 ERA. The Miami, Florida native was called up to Trenton and made one regular season appearance for the Thunder. He made one post-season start for the Thunder, and allowed six hits and four runs in four innings. He received a no-decision at Akron (9/10) in the second game of the Eastern League Championship Series. He also appearaed in three games for the GCL Yankees, and was 0-2 with a 14.73 ERA. Garcia missed the entire 2007 season after recovering from Tommy John Surgery. He was selected in the 3rd round of the 2004 draft out of Gulliver Prep HS in Miami, Florida.

Trenton and Reading wrap up their series on Thursday night from First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. RHP Zach McAllister (5-2, 1.61) will start for Trenton against Reading RHP Vance Worley (4-3, 3.16). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Friday night to start a series against the Binghamton Mets (Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets).
