
Rock Cats Defeated Altoona Again

New Britain, CT - New Britain right fielder Juan Portes had three hits and three RBI to lead the Rock Cats to a 7-3 win over Altoona on Thursday night.
The Curve jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with three singles against starter Cole DeVries. Gorkys Hernandez started the inning off with a base hit to center field and scored on a one-out single by Jim Negrych. Steven Lerud added an RBI single to left field.
Altoona starter Kyle Bloom make quick work of the Rock Cats in the bottom of the inning, allowing a one-out single to Portes before forcing Whit Robbins into an inning-ending double play. The second inning was a different story. Wilson Ramos led off the inning and reached on an error by shortstop Brian Friday. Erik Lis (3-for-4) singled and Rene Tosoni drew a two-out walk to load the bases. That set the stage for Yancarlos Ortiz, who singled to knock in Ramos and Lis to tie the game. Bloom (0-4) plunked Brian Dinkelman with a pitch to load the bases again and be forced from the game in favor of Sean Smith. Portes cleared the bases with a double to center field for a 5-2 advantage.
DeVries held Altoona scoreless through the next three innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. He allowed a leadoff double to Negrych and single to the next batter, Friday, which knocked in Negrych. DeVries allowed another single before being lifted for Yohan Pino with no outs. Pino managed to force a double play and strike out the final batter of the inning.
The Rock Cats scored again in the sixth when Danny Valencia led off with a double and scored on Lis' single to right field. Wilson Ramos tacked on another run with a solo homer to leadoff the eighth.
Pino (1-1) fired three perfect innings in relief to pick up the win for the âCats. Jose Lugo notched his second save with two shutout innings.
