Defenders Win Game & Series 2-1

June 11, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- In the rubber match of the series, Connecticut and Bowie arguably played the fastest game this season as the Defenders took the series with a 2-1 final at Dodd Stadium Thursday night.

Connecticut plated two unanswered runs in the third inning then flipped the switch to cruise control as they coasted to a win in one hour in forty nine minutes.

Bowie struck in their first at bat with a single by SS-Robert Valido who stole second and then scored on a 1B-Brandon Snyder RBI double.

In the third, 2B-Sharlon Schoop leadoff with a single, LF-Bobby Felmy walked and both were sacrificed over into scoring position by C-Jackson Williams. With DH-Brock Bond at the plate, Bowie's starter, RHP-John Mariotti skipped a wild pitch to the backstop allowing Schoop to score and tie the game at one. Bond eventually drew a walk and CF-Mike McBryde sent a chopper up the middle but beat out the inning ending double play to plate Felmy for a Defenders 2-1 lead.

After working out that kinks, both Mariotti (1-4) and Defender's starter, RHP- Brooks McNiven (1-2) found themselves in a pitchers duel. Both lasted seven innings, a season high for McNiven, but in the end Mariotti allowed two earned runs compared to McNiven's one earned to suffer the loss. The Defenders defense was stellar behind McNiven turning a game high four double plays.

The Defenders sealed the deal with 1,2,3 innings by LHP-Joe Paterson in the eighth and RHP-Dan Otero in the ninth as Otero signed off on his thirteenth save of the season.

Connecticut will play host to another Southern Division team in the Altoona Curve (Pirates) tomorrow and begin a weekend series at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. Friday is always Fireworks night at the ballpark! For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Defenders Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or online at ctdefenders.com.
