Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors saw their two-goal lead slip away late in regulation, but scored on four of their five chances in the shootout, and knocked off the Phoenix RoadRunners, 5-4, Tuesday night, in front of 4,380 at Rabobank Arena.

The Condors (32-13-8, 72) went out in front quickly with a pair of goals in the first 3:33 of the contest. Rane Carnegie opened the scoring when he jammed home a rebound of Scott Balan's drive from the right point to make it 1-0 and less than a minute later, Todd Griffith doubled the margin, off a headman feed from Reagan Leslie.

Rejean Beauchemin, making his second start in goal for Bakersfield, made a couple of stellar saves, including a stop on a two-on-one break, to maintain the 2-0 lead through the first period.

Bakersfield went up 3-0 at 10:46 of the second, when Josh Liebenow hammered home a loose puck after another Balan blast from the point.

Phoenix (24-26-5, 53 points) finally put one past Beauchemin at 12:06 of the second period. After the Condors failed to score on a three-on-two rush short- handed, Todd Jackson scored on a breakaway to cut the lead to 3-1.

The RoadRunners closed to within 3-2 early in the third, when Chanse Fitzpatrick tucked home a rebound at 3:19.

The Condors restored the two-goal lead when Griffith banked the puck off a Phoenix defenseman for his second of the night at 16:48.

But Phoenix refused to quit, and scored twice late to tie it up, as Brock Hooton and Chris Cava found the back of the net to knot it 4-4. The latter came with just 16.9 seconds left, and sent the game to overtime.

Neither team scored in the extra session, setting the stage for the shootout.

Notes: Balan's three assists on the night tied his career high. Liebenow and Griffith now share the team lead with 23 goals apiece. The Condors are now 8-1-4 in their last 13 games, and 16-3-5 in 2007. Brett Lutes was activated from the 3-day injured list, and Alex Kim was placed on the three-day injured list.

The Condors now head up north to Alaska to start their four-city, nine-game road trip with an 8:15 p.m. start Friday night. They'll play the Aces again Saturday at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday at 6:05 p.m. From there, they have three games in Utah, two games in Phoenix, and one in Long Beach to round out the trip.

The team returns to The Nest on March 17th for a game against the Stockton Thunder, as Bright House Networks, 101.5 KGFM and American Business Machines present SpongeBob Squarepants and the St. Patrick's Day Jersey Raffle and Auction. SpongeBob will be live and in person to entertain the crowd, plus five lucky fans will win special game-worn St. Patrick's Day jerseys, with proceeds from the auction donated to Kern Adult Literacy Council.
