Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - Mathieu Brunelle recorded the third hat trick of the season for the Bakersfield Condors and Connor James returned from the AHL with three assists as they defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings 7-3 at the Bear Mountain Arena on Friday night.
The Condors lit the lamp three times on 20 first period shots, with Paul Rosebush, Brett Lutes and Mathieu Brunelle each getting goals. Brunelle scored just 59 seconds into the game to set the pace for the Condors. Lutes goal came on the power play and Rosebush netted his ninth goal in the last 13 games. Victoria got two goals of their own, scoring on a late power play to make it 3-2 after 20 minutes.
Twenty more second period shots yielded three more tallies for the visitors. Ryan Gills potted a power play goal to give him eight on the season early in the second. Brunelle's second lamp lighter of the night made it 5-2 Condors, and he later assisted on Brad Mehalko's 18th of the year with just 1.8 seconds remaining on the clock.
Brunelle completed the hat trick late in the third with some nifty moves at the top of the crease slipping home his fifth goal in just three games since being acquired by Bakersfield from Dayton. Scott Turner finished the scoring with Victoria's final goal less than a minute later. Connor James, in his return to the Bakersfield lineup from the American Hockey League, recorded three assists.
The Condors play on Saturday night in Victoria at 7:00 p.m. and then return home for a March 11th meeting with the Alaska Aces at the Rabobank Arena. That night the ZOOperstars return to Bakersfield, featuring the likes of Shaquille O'Seal, Snail Earnhardt, Jr. and LeBronco James, sponsored by Bright House Networks and 101.5 KGFM.
