Lynx douse Inferno in OT

March 5, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx had to come from behind to do it, but they earned their first overtime win of the year by a 4-3 count over the Inferno in Columbia on Saturday night.

Matt Dzieduszycki staked the Lynx to a 1-0 lead with his 18th goal of the season at 18:51 of the opening frame, with assists from Regan Darby and Jason Saal. Columbia, however, would score three times in the second period, twice in the final minute of play, to put the Lynx down 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Knowing an early goal would serve as a comeback catalyst, the Lynx got just that from Darby at 2:52 when he put the puck towards the Inferno net, using a deflection in front of netminder Mike Minard to make it a 3-2 game from Dan Sullivan. Then, Darby would later find former Las Vegas teammate Doug Wright at the side of the Inferno net for a tip-in past Minard with 15:36 gone in the final frame to set the stage for overtime.

Heading into the extra session, Augusta had yet to see an overtime decision with Jason Saal in net. Jamie Johnson made sure it was a positive one, outworking an Inferno defender on the right wing for a loose puck and firing it over the left shoulder of Minard for his 20th goal of the year and Augusta's first overtime win of the season. Phil Cole added the helper on the goal at 2:20 of the OT to jump Augusta's record to 22-26-7 on the year.

Saal registered the win with 23 saves while Minard turned aside 21 Lynx shots in helping his team to the single point.

The Lynx are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 pm in Florence against the Pee Dee Pride. Pre-game show kicks off one-half hour before game time on your home for Lynx hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
