FLORENCE, SC -- The Pee Dee Pride ended their four-game losing streak with a 5-4 shooout victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in front of 3,632 fans at the Florence Civic Center.
Pee Dee scored the only goal of the opening period as Darryl Green gathered in a pass from Steve Cygan and one-timed a shot past SOuth Carolina goaltender Justin Eddy for his eighth goal of the season.
The game opened up in the second period as the teams combined for six goals. Green's second of the night, another power-play tally at 3:28 made it 2-0. Just 16 seconds later, the Pride went up 3-0 on Steve Cygan's ninth goal of the year.
Mark Ardelan got the Stingrays on the board at 8:41 with a power-play tally, his 13th of the season.
But, the Pride got the goal right back just nine seconds later, as Gregg Johnson tallied his 15th of the season, and his third point of the game.
South Carolina scored three unanswered goals to send the game to overtime. Goals by Rich Peverley and Ed Courtenay in the second period made it 4-3 after two periods.
Peverley's second of the night, 9:09 into the final period, tied the game at 4.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout, with Pee Dee scoring two goals on four shots, and Nick Boucher stopping all four Stingrays shots to pick up his first win since January 21.
Pee Dee was 2-for-4 on the power play, after entering the game 1-for-36 on the power play over the last 10 games, and just 1-for-32 on the season against South Carolina, which entered the night with the league's number-one penalty-kill unit.
Sunday afternoon, the Pride host the Augusta Lynx in a 2:30 p.m. matinee. It's another Sunday Kids' Day at the Lion's Den, with all 200 and 400 level seats just $2.50 for kids 12 and under.
