Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – This evening, the Charlotte Checkers beat the Greenville Grrrowl 3-0 at Cricket Arena in front of a crowd of 6,933. The first in a five game home stand, the shutout helps Charlotte maintain their lead in the East Division.

The Checkers owned the first period, laying claim to it when Dan Preston fired a Thomas Bellemare ricochet past Greenville netminder Mike Brodeur just 39 seconds into the contest. After killing a 4:00 roughing penalty, Dusty Jamieson lit the lamp at 18:34 off a pass from Mike Wirll and Hartford monstrosity Martin Grenier. The second even strength goal of the night for the Checkers put them up 2-0 at the end of the first, and marked the seventh goal in four games for Jamieson.

The Checkers found themselves shorthanded at 3:50 in the second but the Greenville advantage didn't seem to bother Ryan Lang who took an Eddie Pershin pass the length of the ice for the score. Lang finished with two points on the evening and extends his goal streak to four games. Checkers goalie Alex Westlund stopped 20 shots on goal in the period.

Westlund and a strong defense would hold on through the third period, giving the Checkers their first shutout of the season. "It's been a long time coming," remarked Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. "Alex has really been elevating his level of play and our defense is limiting teams' second chances." It was a nice payback for Westlund who was on the losing end of a 3-0 shutout in Greenville on February 25th.

The Checkers face off against the Pee Dee Pride at Cricket Arena on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.
