Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. â In a remarkable finish, Mississippi's Jeff Hutchins scored the deciding goal in the 17th round of the shootout and goaltender Randy Petruk made a total of 39 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping 14 more in the shootout to propel the Sea Wolves over the Pensacola Ice Pilots 3-2 before 4,687 at the Pensacola Civic Center.
The Sea Wolves victory extended their win streak to four games and snapped the Ice Pilots win streak at three.
"It was a really exciting finish," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "Petruk was unbelievable in net. We wanted to make a statement and taking the first of three straight games against Pensacola definitely gets us in the right frame of mind."
Pensacola (38-13-5, 81 points) came out strong and opened the score on a shot from the right point off the stick of Ryan O'Keefe beating Petruk through traffic at 4:09 of the first period. O'Keefe's third goal of the season was assisted by Cory Stillman.
The Ice Pilots made it 2-0 on a breakaway goal by Aaron Phillips at the 14:01 mark of the opening stanza. Chris St. Jacques and Dwayne Hay garnered helpers.
Mississippi (30-21-4, 64 points) had the territorial advantage in the second period, outshooting Pensacola 15-9. The Sea Wolves were rewarded on a goal by John Evangelista at 17:37. Evangelista got the puck past goaltender Todd Ford on a scramble in front of the net for his sixth tally of the year. Assists went to Pat O'Leary and Nicolas Corbeil.
The Sea Wolves got back on even terms at 3:39 of the third. Corbeil faked a shot, then let go with a snap shot from the right circle netting his 13th goal of the campaign. Darryl Campbell and Chris Cava garnered helpers.
In the shootout, the Sea Wolves outscored the Ice Pilots 4-3. Petruk denied Jordan Krestanovich in the 17th round to end the game.
Shootout goal scorers for Mississippi were Travis Lisabeth (1st round), Bates Battaglia (eighth round), Louis Dumont (15th round) and Jeff Hutchins (17th round).
Pensacola received shootout goals off the sticks of Aaron Phillips (1st round). Ryan Vince (eighth round), Nick Lindberg (15th round).
